The Aussie Adventurer – 5 Tips For Planning Your Australian Getaway

Holidays in Australia; There’s nothing like it – Even if you are Australian!

Our endless expanse of coastline, ripe for adventure. Our lush national and state parks and forests, full of verdant life and fresh air. Our highly liveable cities, chock full of trendy bars, happening nightspots and fun for the whole family just a short drive away. But before you see the glorious country that is Australia, you need to be prepared. Let’s take a look at five helpful tips for the planning stage of your Australian getaway.

1. Budget, Budget, Budget

This is the most important tip, because aside from winning a competition – there’s no such thing as traveling for free! So sit down and have a look at your books. Figure out how much you can afford to spend on your cross-country trip down under. It may start with thinking about some handy ways to save a few dollars. Once you’ve set your budget, you can plan the rest of your trip. You’ll know how much you can spend on short-stay accommodation, whether or not you hire a car or take trains, buses and trams, and what day trips and tours you can afford to attend.

2. Keep Your Options Open

Try not to lock yourself into just doing one thing on each day or week. You may be setting yourself up for some disappointment this way. Imagine booking a helicopter tour of Darwin, only to have the day arrive and be grounded due to wild weather (which is not uncommon in Darwin, by the way!). Then imagine if you had a backup plan, like visiting the crocodiles or another indoor activity. Sure, plan ahead your trip and even book yourself some tours and activities but always have a viable contingency handy.

3. Pack For The Weather

Visiting our Melbourne or Adelaide branch is a very different experience weather wise from Darwin. Perhaps those short-shorts and singlets can be popped in the bag after all! Likewise, you’re not going to need a heavy winter jacket in January in Darwin either – despite the monsoonal weather. Make sure that you pack weather-appropriate clothing, and that your travel companions do as well.

4. Pick Great Accommodation

No one wants to go home after a day trip to a dump. There are plenty of hotels, motels, and b&bs all vying for your dollar, but not all of them are up to scratch. A good alternative to your traditional home away from home is booking a serviced apartment – you get all the luxury of apartment living – style, space and modern amenities, without the commitment. Also, you’re not boxed into one or two tiny rooms with a closet for a bathroom!

5. Make a Packing Checklist

You’d hate to arrive at your first destination – usually, the apartment after a long flight or train ride, realize you’ve forgotten something essential, like medication or your cash. Grab a notepad, or go digital and use your smart phone, to make a checklist. Include all your essential items such as meds, toiletries, chargers and devices and check them off as you pack. But most importantly, enjoy this experience – you are about to go on vacation after all!!
